SleepSafe® beds are made by SleepSafe Beds. Healthcare DME is the medical equipment supplier: we handle the insurance and Medicaid process and order the bed configured for the patient.
Is the SleepSafe® Extension Safety Bed covered by Medicaid or insurance?
Yes, for patients who qualify. Healthcare DME supplies the SleepSafe® Extension Safety Bed only through health insurance and Medicaid, when a doctor prescribes it as medically necessary. We are an in-network durable medical equipment supplier with Medicaid in Alaska, Arizona (AHCCCS), Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah and Washington, and with Michigan health plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network, Blue Cross Complete, Meridian, McLaren Health Plan, Health Alliance Plan (HAP), AmeriHealth Caritas Michigan, CareSource, Physicians Health Plan, Ambetter, WellCare, Humana PPO and Zing Health.
Most plans approve a safety bed through prior authorization. Approval depends on the patient’s diagnosis and the safety risks the doctor documents, so it is never guaranteed, but our team knows what plans look for and prepares the request with you. See every plan we accept.

Frequently asked questions
Does Medicaid cover the SleepSafe® Extension bed?
Medicaid and many private plans cover it when it is medically necessary, usually through prior authorization. Plans often ask why a lower bed is not enough, so the letter of medical necessity should describe the climbing and the risks. We are in network with Medicaid in Alaska, Arizona (AHCCCS), Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah and Washington and with major Michigan health plans.
Which SleepSafe® bed height is right?
Choose by how the person moves at night. The SleepSafe® LOW (35¾” floor-to-rail) suits users who roll or slide out of bed; the SleepSafe® II MEDIUM (45¾”) suits users who sit up or kneel; the SleepSafer® TALL (54¾”) suits active climbers; and the SleepSafe® Extension (72″, with an optional top) is for determined climbers. The therapist or doctor writing the letter of medical necessity should explain why the chosen height is needed.
Is the top enclosure required?
No. The SleepSafe® Extension is available with or without a top. The doctor or therapist should state which configuration is needed.
What paperwork does insurance need?
Usually a prescription (written order) from the treating doctor, a letter of medical necessity, recent clinical notes and a copy of the insurance card. The letter should explain the diagnosis, the safety risks during sleep, what has already been tried, and how the bed will be used and supervised. You can upload documents with your eligibility request, or send them later.
