Compare our special needs beds

Every bed below is built for safety during sleep, with padded rails, mesh or a soft enclosure that keeps the person from falling, climbing or wandering out. They differ in height, how open or enclosed they are, and the features caregivers need. Choose a bed to see its details, or ask our team to help you compare.

Who needs a special needs safety bed?

A special needs bed, also called an enclosed bed or safety bed, is prescribed when a person’s medical condition makes an ordinary bed unsafe and other safety measures have not been enough. It protects the person during sleep while still letting caregivers see and reach them.

Conditions we often see

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Angelman, Rett, Down, Smith-Magenis and Pitt-Hopkins syndromes
  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease

Night-time safety risks a bed can address

  • Falling or rolling out of bed, including during seizures
  • Climbing out and wandering through the home at night
  • Leaving the home (elopement)
  • Head banging and other self-injury against hard surfaces
  • Getting trapped between a mattress and ordinary bed rails
  • Getting into unsafe areas such as stairs or the kitchen

How to get a special needs bed through Medicaid or insurance

Safety beds are covered as durable medical equipment when they are medically necessary. Most Medicaid programs and private plans require prior authorization, and they decide each request on the documentation. Here is how we make it simple:

  1. Send an eligibility requestUse the form below or call us. Tell us the bed you are interested in and your insurance. Email is optional.
  2. We check your coverageWe verify your benefits with your Medicaid or insurance plan and explain any cost to you.
  3. Your doctor writes the orderWe send a checklist for the prescription and letter of medical necessity, so nothing is missing.
  4. We submit the prior authorizationWe prepare the request, send it to your plan and follow up until there is a decision.
  5. Your bed is built and deliveredOnce approved, the bed is made to order and delivered to your home.
  6. We stay with youQuestions about setup, accessories or a future upgrade? Our team is a phone call away.

What the letter of medical necessity should include

  • The diagnosis and how it affects safety during sleep
  • Specific incidents: falls, injuries, climbing, wandering or seizures at night
  • What has already been tried (bed rails, alarms, mattresses on the floor, supervision) and why it was not enough
  • Why the requested bed and its height or enclosure are needed
  • How the bed will be used and how the person will be supervised

Plans may deny a request that describes the bed as a restraint or as a convenience for caregivers, so the documentation should focus on the safety risks caused by the condition. Children under 21 enrolled in Medicaid are also protected by the EPSDT benefit, which covers medically necessary equipment.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Medicaid cover a special needs bed?

Often, yes. Medicaid covers an enclosed safety bed when a doctor documents that it is medically necessary, for example because of seizures, falls, wandering at night or self-injury, and when other safety measures have not worked. Most plans require prior authorization. For children under 21, Medicaid's EPSDT benefit covers medically necessary equipment. Coverage is decided case by case, and we check your plan before anything is ordered.

Which Medicaid programs is Healthcare DME in network with?

We are an in-network durable medical equipment supplier for Medicaid in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Washington. In Michigan we are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network, Blue Cross Complete, Meridian, McLaren Health Plan, HAP, AmeriHealth Caritas Michigan and other plans listed on this page.

Does private insurance pay for an enclosed safety bed?

Many commercial plans cover a safety bed as durable medical equipment when it is medically necessary. Some require prior authorization; in Michigan these include Blue Care Network, Blue Cross Complete, McLaren Health Plan and Blue Cross Blue Shield Advantage plans. We verify your benefits and tell you about any deductible or copay before your bed is ordered.

What documents does insurance need for a safety bed?

Usually a prescription (written order) from the treating doctor, a letter of medical necessity, recent clinical notes, and a copy of the insurance card. The letter should explain the diagnosis, the specific safety risks at night, what has already been tried and why it did not work, and how the bed will be used and supervised. We send you a checklist after your eligibility request.

Who qualifies for a special needs bed?

Children and adults whose condition makes a standard bed unsafe, such as autism, epilepsy and seizure disorders, cerebral palsy, Angelman, Rett, Down or Smith-Magenis syndrome, traumatic brain injury, dementia or other developmental and neurological conditions, especially when there is a history of falls, climbing, wandering or injury at night.

Can I buy a special needs bed without insurance?

These beds are supplied through insurance and Medicaid only, so we do not list an online price. If your plan does not cover the bed, call us and we will talk you through the options available to you.

    How long does approval take?

It depends on the plan. Once we have the prescription and letter of medical necessity, prior authorization decisions commonly take a few weeks. Each bed is then built to order by its manufacturer, which adds production and delivery time. We keep you updated at every step.

Is an enclosed bed a restraint?

An enclosed safety bed is prescribed to keep a person safe during sleep, not to restrain them. Plans can deny requests that describe the bed as a restraint or as a convenience for caregivers, so the medical documentation should focus on safety risks caused by the condition. We can tell you what your plan looks for.

Do you deliver special needs beds outside Michigan?

Yes. We are based in Ann Arbor, Michigan and supply special needs beds to patients in Michigan and in the states where we are in network with Medicaid. Beds ship from the manufacturer directly to your home.
